Inside The Numbers: Dolphins Deliver Strong Defensive Performance Despite Loss to Titans

The Miami Dolphins lost 31-12 to the Tennessee Titans on Monday night. Despite the loss, there were positives the team can build on moving forward this season.

We go Inside the Numbers, presented by BDO, to take a look at the most notable team stats, individual metrics, milestones and more from Miami's Week 4 matchup.

Defense Delivers

Miami has fielded a strong defense so far this season, and it had arguably its top performance of the year against Tennessee.

Defensive Coordinator Anthony Weaver's unit held the Titans to just 244 total yards and 102 passing yards, both of which are the lowest totals since Miami's Week 15 win over the New York Jets in 2023.

Entering Week 5, Miami ranks fifth in the NFL in passing yards allowed per game (162.5 yards) and sixth in total yards allowed per game (282.0 yards).

The Dolphins also allowed Tennessee to convert just two of its 12 third-down attempts. For the season, Miami's defense has limited opponents to a 23.8% conversion rate on third downs, the lowest allowed percentage in the league.

Ogbah, Brooks Lead Linebackers

On Tennessee's opening drive, linebacker Emmanuel Ogbah dropped back into coverage and picked off quarterback Will Levis. This was Ogbah's second career interception, after his first came in Week 3 of the 2023 season in Miami's 70-20 win over the Denver Broncos. This was Miami's third interception of the season, as defensive tackle Zach Sieler and cornerback Kader Kohou each recorded takeaways against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 3.

Ogbah finished with a season-high six tackles, the most he's tallied in a game as a Dolphin.

Linebacker Jordyn Brooks stuffed the stat sheet for the second week in a row. After setting a season-high in tackles with nine in Week 3 against his former team, Brooks posted 13 tackles against the Titans, which is the most he's had in a game since Week 12 of the 2022 season.

Brooks also finished with a sack and a pass defended. He is one of two players in the NFL this season with at least 13 tackles, a sack and a pass defensed in a game, joining Minnesota Vikings linebacker Blake Cashman. Brooks is also the first Dolphins player to record at least 13 tackles, one sack and one pass defensed in a game since Hall of Fame linebacker Zach Thomas did so against the Carolina Panthers in 2005.

Linebacker Anthony Walker Jr. notched eight tackles, his best of the season, while linebacker Jaelan Phillips made an important third-down stop for the Dolphins with a batted down pass from quarterback Mason Rudolph.

Huntley Leads Ground Game

Starting in his first game with the Dolphins after being signed off Baltimore's practice squad, quarterback and South Florida native Tyler Huntley led the team in rushing with 40 yards on eight carries. On third-and-11, Huntley scrambled for 12 yards which helped set Miami up for a 44-yard field goal in the second quarter. Huntley also recorded his first rushing touchdown since Week 12 of the 2022 season in the fourth quarter with a 1-yard rush.

Rookie running back Jaylen Wright had his busiest day as a pro, running the ball nine times for 32 yards, which included a career-long run of 20 yards.

Running back De'Von Achane totaled 10 carries for 15 yards. He also caught three passes for 14 yards and now has 20 receptions for 187 receiving yards this year. His 20 catches and 187 receiving yards are the most among NFL running backs this season.

Sanders Nearly Sets Personal Record

On Miami's second drive of the third quarter, kicker Jason Sanders nailed a 56-yard field goal, which is tied for the second best of his career behind his 57-yard field goal against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 16 of the 2023 season.

Sanders also made a 44-yard field goal in the second quarter. He now has three field goals of 40 or more yards this season, including two longer than 50.

Individual/Team Stats and Milestones

Cornerback Storm Duck was productive in his first career start. The rookie totaled three tackles, including a third-down takedown of running back Tyjae Spears that resulted in a 5-yard loss.

Wide receiver Malik Washington made his NFL debut. The sixth-round rookie caught one pass for eight yards. Rookie offensive tackle Patrick Paul also made his first career start at left tackle.

Several other Dolphins achieved games played and started milestones. Ogbah made his 75th career start, offensive tackle Austin Jackson made his 50th career start and defensive tackle Zach Sieler appeared in his 80th career game.
