Inside The Numbers: Dolphins' Second Half Defense Remains Solid As Achane's Strong Sophomore Season Continues

The Miami Dolphins were defeated by the Seattle Seahawks, 24-3, on Sunday afternoon. Despite the loss, there were positives the team can build on moving forward this season.

We go Inside the Numbers, presented by BDO, to take a look at the most notable team stats, individual metrics, milestones and more from Miami's Week 3 matchup.

Second Half Defense Stands Out

In his first year as Miami's defensive coordinator, Anthony Weaver has led a unit that has allowed just seven points in the second half this season.

Against the Seahawks, the Dolphins defense allowed just one scoring drive in the fourth quarter, after giving up three in the first quarter. The Dolphins gave up 370 total yards – 223 in the first half and 147 in the second.

Kohou, Sieler Come Up With Takeaways

Miami recorded its first two interceptions of the season against the Seahawks on a pair of tipped passes.

The first takeaway came with 2:28 to go in the first quarter. Quarterback Geno Smith, pressured on his dropback by linebacker Emmanuel Ogbah, threw an errant pass to running back Zach Charbonnet which bounced off his hands and was picked off by cornerback Kader Kohou, who returned the interception to Seattle's six-yard line. This was Kohou's second interception of his career and first since the 2022 season.

Defensive tackle Zach Sieler pulled in an interception of his own after defensive tackle Calais Campbell batted a pass that was intended for wide receiver Tyler Lockett in the third quarter. Sieler has now picked off a pass in two straight seasons after not recording an interception in the first six years of his career. It was Miami's first interception by a defensive lineman since Sieler recorded a pick six in Week 14 of the 2023 campaign against the Tennessee Titans.

Sieler is one of three NFL defensive linemen to record two interceptions since the 2023 season, joining B.J. Hill of the Cincinnati Bengals and A.J. Epenesa of the Buffalo Bills.

Comparatively, the Dolphins did not give away the ball in Seattle, marking the second turnover-free game this season.

Backfield Brilliance

Dolphins running back De'Von Achane finished the game with 30 rushing yards on 11 carries and 28 receiving yards on three catches. This steady performance continued what has been a strong start to his second season.

Achane has now recorded 17 catches over the first three games this season. This is the most catches by a Dolphins running back in the first three games of a season since at least 1970. Through the end of the Week 3 Sunday games, his 173 receiving yards are the most by a running back in the NFL this year and are the second-most by a Dolphins running back in the first three weeks of a season since 1970. Only Ronnie Brown had more through three games with 175 receiving yards in 2007. Achane's 370 receiving yards in his career are the most among active NFL running backs in their first 14 games.

Achane's 190 career touches rank third among NFL running backs in their first 14 games since he entered the league in 2023. His 1,320 yards from scrimmage are also the most among NFL running backs in their first 14 games since he entered the NFL.

Waddle Notches Start No. 50

Wide receiver Jaylen Waddle made his 50th career start against Seattle and recorded a team-high four receptions for 26 yards.

The fourth-year wideout now has 3,561 receiving yards in his career, which is the most among Dolphins players in their first 50 career games since at least 1970. He also ranks third among wide receivers from the 2021 NFL Draft class, trailing Bengals wideout Ja'Marr Chase (3,814) and Detroit Lions receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown (3,795).

Individual/Team Stats and Milestones

Campbell recorded a sack in the third quarter, marking his second of the season. He has recorded 12.5 sacks against the Seahawks in his career, which is his most against any team. He's tallied 107.5 career sacks, which is third-most of any player on an NFL roster.

Defensive tackle Da'Shawn Hand recorded his fifth career sack, his first with the Dolphins. Sieler also added a sack, the 21st of his career.

Safety Jordan Poyer posted a team-high nine tackles, the most he's had in his three games with Miami and his highest tally since Week 17 of the 2023 season.

Achane had a 32-yard kickoff return in the first quarter, marking the first return of his career. This was also the first kickoff return for the Dolphins this season.

Wide receiver Braxton Berrios recorded a 44-yard punt return in the second quarter, which is the longest return by Miami in the regular season since wide receiver Jakeem Grant's 88-yard return against the L.A. Rams in 2020.

Several Dolphins achieved games-played milestones. Cornerback Siran Neal appeared in his 100th career game, cornerback Kendall Fuller appeared in his 120th career game, linebacker David Long Jr. and long snapper Blake Ferguson both appeared in their 70th career game, while Hand appeared in his 50th career game, and cornerback Jalen Ramsey made his 120th career start.
