Practice 3: 2024 Miami Dolphins Training Camp Notebook

After the defense piled up interceptions and sacks over the first two days of camp, the offense responded in a big way. Led by quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and an array of pass catchers, the offense struck for several long touchdowns.

Here are the day's highlights:

Practice 3, July 26, 2024

Top Moment

On a day where Tyreek Hill and De'Von Achane produced three touchdowns covering better than 150 yards, the proverbial game ball goes to River Cracraft, who caught a pair of 50-plus yard scores. The seventh-year wide receiver got behind the defense and hauled in a beautiful pass from Tagovailoa for a 65-yard touchdown early in practice.

On the last play of the day, Cracraft got on top of cornerback Siran Neal as Skylar Thompson's pass took flight. Cracraft adjusted to the ball by coming back in the defender, high-pointed it, made the catch and strolled in for his second visit to paydirt.

Hill found the end zone twice – one on a 70-yard bomb from Tagovailoa to open practice, while scoring another with a catch and long run after the southpaw ripped a tight window throw that sprung his speedy receiver to daylight. Achane scored on a similar throw where he elevated for the ball, landed on his feet and took off for a long touchdown scamper.

Top Quote

It's fitting that the Dolphins produced so many game-changing plays mere hours after Head Coach Mike McDaniel was asked about the concept of sustaining drives. Nobody hit more explosive plays the last two seasons than Miami, but the offense is still searching for ways to take the production to another level and force defenses to cover every blade of grass.

Our players on offense here are immersed enough in the system to understand areas where if you improve, you can make everything improve … Unless you want to see very deep coverage with everyone 30 yards down the field, you better make people pay. Otherwise they’re going to keep doing it. Dolphins HC Mike McDaniel

More Top Performers

The running backs found space during the 11-on-11 portion of practice. Jeff Wilson, Salvon Ahmed and Achane all found cutback lanes for explosive plays.

The defense bounced back late in practice with a handful of pressures and sacks. Rookie outside linebacker Grayson Murphy sprinted around the corner after a quick pass rush win for a would-be sack on quarterback Skylar Thompson.

Linebackers Jordyn Brooks and Anthony Walker Jr. flashed yet again, particularly in their one-on-one drills. Brooks showcased the coverage skills that made him a coveted free agent this offseason, particularly staying in phase on a route to the shifty Achane.

Cornerback Cam Smith had a pass breakup in coverage on star wide receiver Jaylen Waddle. Smith displayed his quick-twitch ability and knack for finding the football.
